Typography Blogs.

Friends of Type.

I really love this blog. I think its very useful because it shows a technique that I never thought would be as successful as it is. I think the use of hand rendered text in the current market works really well and the way the main focal points have been brought out with the red pen works well. I think the article about Jeff Rogers' work is really useful because it shows different techniques coming to use and mediums that once was frowned upon in the graphic design industry.

I Love Typography.

I think this article is really useful because of how it tells you what they think about producing a typeface and how they use models from other typefaces to create there own individual one. I think this is very useful for when I come to create my own typeface. This article has been very useful as at one stage in the process of working I will have to start creating my own typefaces.

Ministry of Type.

I think this article is quite useful as it tells you all about the use of typography and about the layout. It shows you in images that the layout of the type is very important with the sizing at an ample importance. The article shows a lot about composition of the type, exposed structure and flow.

Form Fifty Five.

I think this blog really is quite useful because it has showed me that the typography is sometimes printed all over the world. I think the typeface has to be very legible because its printed on t-shirts etc.

Thinking with Type

This article about Kerning is very useful as it tells you all about what it is, how its used and when to use it. It shows you how to use it on the adobe programs and when and where its been used. I will use this technique a lot in my work when trying to sort out the spacing in my design work.

Typographic Design Companies...

FontSmith.

I really like the work of FontSmith. I think this piece in particular is very effective with the way the logo has been set out so the work film is inside of the shape of the number 4. I think the typeface used in the general body of type is really effective being very legible and the colours used with the black and white works well for the hierarchy of information. I think the setup of the bespoke typography in the logo is really effective with the spacing to the left and right of the word 'film' being exactly the same makes it look really effective.

Dalton Maag.
I think the work of Dalton Maag is amazing. They produce a new typeface for each client that is specifically made to precise details. This particular piece of typography is really nice. I think the 'Galactic' typeface works best with the heavy text at the beginning leading back into the finer size. I think the typography in the middle of the illustration works really well and is now obviously very successful as when its seen it is immediately recognised as the typography for Virgin. I think the whole typeface is incredibly successful and immediately recognisable.

50 Years of Helvetica...

Helvetica has been around for many years. It was first developed in 1957 and has not been around for many years.

The first image I chose to review is the top left. I chose this image as I think its very effective with the two strong colours and the way the typeface looks as if its being held up by people works really well and its very easy to see even if the design is just in a simplistic colour pallet.

The second design I chose to look at is the very pixelated illustration of a man, top right. I think this illustration works well because of the change in time showing an image in a modern world from a very dated pixelated age. Once again the colour pallet is kept very simple just using tones of the blue.

The third image I chose to look at is of the woman with the paintings/posters around her. I think its quite a successful image and I think it works really well with the simplicity of the illustration contrasted with the bold colour pallet. I don't think it works as well as the other images as it just doesn't seem to stand out from the rest of them.

I absolutely love this illustration. I think this is the most successful illustration out of them all with the fine detail made by the fine liners and the way they have been coloured only using water to mix with the black of the fine liner.

I think this design is very creative. I think it works really well with the white on black text and really makes them words stand out from all of the rest. I think the 'Love Design' type works quite well but i still don't think it works as good as  the top text but that is a good way of showing the hierarchy of information.

Candy Collective.

The site is very easy to navigate. I think its quite successful when wanting to look at the work of the 50 years of helvetica as its very easy and simple. I think it looks really attractive with the simple three colour pallet and it makes the hierarchy of information easy to see. Obviously with the white being the main focal point and then the smaller black text behind it. I think the website is very successful and it looks really correct.

10 Typographic Designers...

Alan Kitching.
Alan kitchen uses a lot of mixed media in his typography pieces. I think they are all ver effective but mostly this one. I think the way smaller typography comes together to form larger letters is a lot more effective. I really like the colours used and the texture inside of the letters, it almost looks as if the type is made of brusho, and i think even if it was and then a clipping mask made around each letter it would be very successful.

Mike Perry.
I dont really get excited about the work of Mike Perry. However I think the simplicity works in the form of colour but all of the black lines seem to blend together and its really hard to distinguish each letter. I think perhaps if the design was in colour it possibly would be easier to understand.

Neville Brody.

I absolutely love the simplicity of the work of Neville Brody. I think the simplicity of the shapes are extremely effective as well as the pastel toned colours mixed with some of the illumines tones of the greens and bright oranges. I think overall the typeface looks amazing and it all comes together really well.

David Carson.
I really like the look of the work of David Carson. I think his typefaces are very successful and obviously make him a lot of money but I think overall they are very attracting. I think the way they are positioned on a document is very important and I think they need to be used at a specific time and only when necessary as I think they really could be wrongly used and overused.

Herb Lubalin.

I really love the work of Lubalin. I think his typefaces are very illustrative and beautiful however they are very hard to read and the legibility isn't really top form. I think the look Lubalin in going for has to be very different and special because it looks nothing like what i've seen before. I think his work looks a little bit like Si Scotts with the swirls etc just not to that extreme that he does.

Eric Gill.
Im not too sure if i like the work of Gill or not. I think because all of the fonts he made are so old now none of them are very fashionable. However, I can really imagine this font to have been very successful back when it was created because if actually does look quite modern now and up to date so back then it would have been very trendy. I don't think the typeface could be use in a newspaper however but I do think it would be good on a poster of flyer, something not as formal.

Robert Brown John.
I really like the work of BrownJohn. I think its very successful and looks really current even thought it was created a number of years ago. I think it could be used really well in a form of poster and would look really modern and i think its still very easy to read and understand what the word says. However I don't think you would be able to read full paragraphs of this type.

Stefan Sagmeister

I love this typography piece. I think the way the typeface varies a lot is very successful and the fact that no letter is ever the same is very different. I think the way Sagmeister produced this piece of work is amazing and the way the type takes shape around the face works really well. On the other hand i think it is really hard to read some of the smaller type but that may well be the style he was trying to meet because it is still really successful.

Si Scott.
I adore the work of Si Scott. He has been someone I aspire to work like and how easy all of his ideas come to mind. His typography work is absolutely amazing and every piece is some what different to each other and very 'solo'. I really like this piece of typography as its all pattern based and i think the fact its in black and white makes it look very sleek and cool. I think looking at it in this size it isn't too hard to read but then when trying to read it at a smaller size the legibility isn't really at its best.

Matthew Carter
Im not overly keen on the work of Carter. I do think its ver legible and simple but I don't think the typeface looks very modern. I think because the typeface was created so long ago it would have worked well back then but now i don't think it does.
